Phil started working the land in 1974, farming organically in a community in Scotland before moving to Bristol in 1981 and working at the City Farm. For several years, he worked with children and adults, teaching them about food and farming. Phil has since devoted his working life – embedded in farming, retailing and spreading the organic word – to building a community engaged in creating a better, fairer and more sustainable world for all. Phil has served on the Soil Association Council, was a founding member of The Community Farm and has helped support several other Bristol based food and farming projects. Phil is a board member of the Heart of BS13 social enterprise.

Phil founded the award-winning Better Food in 1992 and this remains his biggest achievement; to have founded and led a successful company that has a brand well known in Bristol and through many organic circles for putting people and planet first. He plans to roll out Better Food stores nationally.

Phil recently published Food for Thought, a book based on his life-long experiences and offering insights into the sustainable food system. Filled with fascinating stories and insightful contributions to empower entrepreneurs and consumers alike to take the lead on their own sustainable food journey.

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall on Phil Haughton, taken from Food for Thought:

“…after knowing Phil for several years, and enjoying some rousing conversations about food provenance and food politics (often fuelled by the kind of food and drink that we both get so excited about) I still knew very little about his origins…

There can’t be many people whose parents bought them a subscription to the Soil Association as a 14th birthday present. And if only more kids – all kids – had a chance to camp out in wild places, gutting fish in a mountain stream and cooking them over a camp fire; and to harvest fruit and vegetables from orchards and fields, rather than just from the supermarket shelves.”
